Tips for determining your Birkenstock size:

If you own a pair, its size and width are stamped on the footbed. The width is indicated by the footprint next to the EU size. An outlined footprint indicates a regular width and a solid footprint indicates a narrow width.

39
Regular Width
(outlined footprint)
39
Narrow Width
(solid footprint)

The difference between regular and narrow is primarily through the toe area of the footbed. When a regular width footbed is held back to back with a narrow width footbed, the loss of width is most obvious at the little toe. The narrow width footbed is also about 1/8" shorter than the regular width footbed of the same EU size, which is why we sometimes recommend sizing up in the narrow width footbed, especially for women's sizes (see sizing chart below).

If you've ever purchased from us, we may have your size in our records. To inquire about your order history, please call us at (800) 488-8316.

When trying on a pair of Birkenstocks for the first time, unbuckle all straps and place the sandal on the floor. Position your heel comfortably in the heel cup, then buckle the straps, working in the direction from toes to ankle. Generally, the strap near the toes will be tightest and the straps higher on the instep will be a bit looser. Finally, if your style has a heel strap, buckle it with enough room to slide a finger or two between your heel and the strap. The primary function of the heel strap is to prevent one from "walking out" of the shoe; if it is buckled too tightly, it may affect the fit by forcing the foot too far forward in the footbed. Once all straps are secured, walk around the room to check for proper size. In a good fit there will usually be 1/8" to 1/4" of space between the toes and the lip around the perimeter of the footbed. This space allows for break-in and provides sufficient room for the toes while walking.

Birkenstock offers three different levels of arch support:

Birkenstock Classic Levels
Classic Soft Footbed Level Two moderate, cushioned arch support
Classic Footbed Level Three pronounced arch support
Classic High Arch Footbed Level Four aggressive arch support
20% more cork
flared heel cup for stability

Birki's

Birki's footwear are licensed by Birkenstock, and the sizing is similar to Birkenstock Classic Footbed sizing.

Birki's styles provide Level Two arch support, which is more moderate than the prominent Level Three arch support of the Birkenstock Classic Footbed. Birki's footbeds include the Birki's Cork Footbed, the Birki's Soft Footbed, and the Birki's waterproof polyurethane footbed. Some styles may also be available with Birki's Soft Base, which is a midsole that provides additional cushioning between the cork footbed and the EVA sole.

Some customers feel the Birki's Cork Footbed is roomier in the toe area than the Birkenstock Classic Footbed. It's not really that the footbed is wider, but it has a slightly more rounded shape in the toe area. Some customers notice this and some do not. If you like the Birki's Cork Footbed, you might also be interested in the Papillio Footbed, which is very similar.

Birki's waterproof sandals, which use a polyurethane footbed, run a little bit short compared to the cork footbed styles. If your toes fit up to the edge of the footbed in your cork sandals, you may want to try one size longer in the styles that use a polyurethane footbed, such as the Haiti and the Aruba. The polyurethane footbed will not form to the shape of your foot like a cork footbed will. If you do have space in front of your toes in your cork footbed styles, you might not need to size up in the waterproof styles.

When trying on Birki's clog styles such as the Super Birki or Professional Birki, it may be helpful to remove the insoles from the clogs, place them on the floor, and then stand on them when they are outside of the clogs. This allows you to better see how your feet fill out the insoles. In general, the difference from one size to the next is about 1/4". If the length looks fine but the clog is just too roomy, some customers have remedied this by placing an additional insert either on top of or beneath the removable insole.

Replacement insoles for the Birki's clogs are available from $20 per pair plus s&h. To inquire or place an order, please call us at (800) 488-8316.

Chaco

Chaco footwear are available in U.S. whole sizes and provide moderate to pronounced arch support. We stock the medium width, which fits a medium to narrow foot, however the wide width may be available for special order in select styles.

Sizes on performance sandals are located on the back of the heel. The width is indicated by either dots or dashes before and after the size. Dots indicate a medium width and dashes indicate a wide width.

Chaco's polyurethane LUVSEAT™ platforms (or footbeds) are accepted by the American Podiatric Medical Association. Three options are available to suit your adventure:

Chaco LUVSEAT™ Platforms
XO1 Platform
This is the original platform, and it provides the most arch support of the three. Channels for the straps run through the polyurethane footbed so you can fine tune the strap adjustment to get a snug and secure fit for active use. The heel riser greatly increases lateral stability.
XO2 Platform
This platform is casual and minimalist. Compared to the XO1, it has a trimmer look, it's a little less bukly, and it has slightly less pronounced arch support.
XO3 Platform
This platform has the same basic shape as the XO1, but it is softer and lighter weight, with a polyurethane thermoplastic shank for more stability.

To learn more about the collections, visit our Dansko Collections page.

If you're familiar with some of our other brands, Dansko runs about a half size short compared to Birkenstock regular width sizing. Most people who wear a regular width in the Birkenstock Classic Footbed will wear one size larger in Dansko.
